In October 1972, our Czech-written ebook Literatury eerne Afriky (Literatures of Black Mrica) used to be released in Prague, proposing a survey of an intensive box. The booklet, which used to be signed at the moment via all 3 authors, differed from so much modern introductions to the research of Mrican literatures in a threefold method: a) The authors tried to hide numerous literacy and literary efforts within the region approximately delimited through Senegal within the west, Kenya within the east, Lake Chad within the north and the Cape within the south. We have been good aware-even at that time-that neither technically nor linguistically would it not be attainable to hide all literary efforts inside that zone. We did test, in spite of the fact that, to incorporate in our survey either the literacies and literatures written within the Indo-European linguae francae (English, French, Portuguese) and in a minimum of a number of of the key African languages of the realm. We didn't try out an exhaustive description, yet needed, quite, to teach the mutual relationships which emerge, if the literatures of thii\ zone, written both within the significant linguae francae or within the African languages, are studied no longer as remoted phenomena, yet as jointly complementary positive aspects. b) As folks have been linguists and one was once a literary historian, we didn't restrict our research of the constructing literacies and literatures to the merely cultural and literary facets. Our goal struggle to deal-whcre and if it used to be relevant-not in basic terms with the method of African literary improvement, but additionally with the simultaneous, complementar.
